Vatican declares SSPX in schism and excommunicates its bishops
On July 1, the Society of St. Pius X consecrated four new bishops without papal approval. In response, the Vatican’s doctrine office declared the society in schism and excommunicated the new bishops along with the two who consecrated them. The Vatican also warned that Catholics who formally adhere to the society face the same penalties. Pope Leo XIV had personally asked the SSPX to hold off in the days before the ceremony.
